Edwin Schauble

I am a professor of geochemistry & astrobiology in the Department of Earth, Planetary and Space Sciences at UCLA. In my research group we study the chemical properties of natural materials at the atomic level. Our goal is to help develop new chemical measurements to study modern and ancient environments on Earth and the other planets.

Current projects include predicting how the stable-isotope compositions of a variety of elements are affected by common chemical reactions like partial oxidation, and the abundances of isotopically substituted methane molecules in air. These studies require detailed understanding of the molecular vibrational frequencies of molecules and crystals, and a number of animated molecular vibrations generated by our research have been placed in a web-accessible archive.
