Geology - Tupiza

Tupiza is tucked against spectacular vertical fins of Miocene red conglomerate. The deposits contain syndeformational features diagnostic of wedge-top deposits, and may contain intermontane basin fill that postdates major thrusting. Some of the basins may have developed at relatively high elevations. The Tupiza basins provide important constraints on the timing of deformation in the central Andean fold-thrust belt and may provide insights into the relationships between shortening and surface uplift in orogenic systems.
