Deep Convection in Gas Giant Planets

Using a new anelastic general circulation model, we show how compressibility effects the formation of deep columnar convection. We show a continuous transition from a linear regime, where the flow matches analytical spiraling convection solutions, to a fully turbulent regime. Dependence on the rotation period of the planet, domain size, and forcing are discussed as well. Finally, we show implications for the gravity measurements of the upcoming JUNO mission to Jupiter.
