Other activities (optional/extra
credit)! Note that a total of 2 extra-credit points are possible --
i.e. four 1/2 point summaries of seminars, movies or the field trip. Email summaries directly to the
instructor, but try to avoid .docx (Microsoft Office 2007) format. Field trip attendance counts 1/2 point towards the total.
Oceanography-related Science Seminars (Optional -- 1/2 Point Extra Credit for 1-2 page summary):
A
note about seminars: these are a major means of communication between
scientists. Although I try to highlight talks that look like they will
be interesting and understandable, the speaker will sometimes presume a
higher level of scientific
knowledge in the audience. For this reason, the quality of your
seminar
experiences will vary. Some talks will be technical, confusing, or
boring. Some will be outstanding. Don't worry if you don't "get"
everything the speaker talks about. The professors in the audience
probably don't get it all either. A good approach is to take a few
notes during the talk, and then follow up with some additional research
or questions to the speaker, your TA, your instructor, at the
library, or on the internet. Many seminars have free snacks &
coffee if you show up early.
