Research Interests Sedimentary basin
analysis, nonmarine depositional systems, tectonics of fold-thrust belts
and continental plateaus. My research
focuses on the erosional history of mountain belts as preserved in the
stratigraphic record of sedimentary basins. The primary goal is to
understand the timing, spatial history, and tectonic causes of basin
development and associated orogenic systems. I have current projects
in the Himalaya-Tibet system of Asia, the Zagros mountains of Iran, the
Andes of South America, and the North American Cordillera. In Tibet,
my studies are aimed at quantifying the timing of surface uplift and
amount of contractional and strike-slip deformation associated with
Mesozoic-Cenozoic basin development in the Tibetan plateau prior to and
during the India-Asia collision. In the Zagros fold-thrust belt,
research is focused on deformation and sedimentation related to the recent
continental collision between Arabia and Eurasia. In South America,
I have been studying the Cenozoic foreland basin system on the eastern
slope of the central Andes as well as intermontane basins in the highest,
most remote parts of the Andes (Altiplano plateau of Bolivia and
Cordillera Blanca of Peru). In North America, a project exists in
the proximal foreland basin near the Charleston-Nebo salient of the Sevier
orogenic belt, north-central Utah. These projects all involve intensive
field work, typically several months per year, as well as structural
geology, quantitative basin modeling, sandstone petrographic analyses,
thermochronology (Ar/Ar, (U-Th)/He, and fission-track), stable isotope
geochemistry, and paleomagnetism.
