Day 3 - More Flamingos and Geysers

We left before the dawn in order to arrive at an incredible geothermal area at dawn. Boiling mudpots and steaming geysers cover an area of approximately 1 square mile and we arrived just as the sun was rising, making for some spectacular photography. After dabbling in the mud, we continued to head south toward the Chilean border. At the border, two brilliantly colored lakes (Laguna Blanca and Laguna Verde) are nestled beneath towering volcanoes. At over 16,000 ft elevation, there were still flamingos! The green color of Laguna Verde stems from high concentrations of metals derived from the volcanism in the area. From there our caravan turned around and bounced our way back to Uyuni via numerous small villages and arid landscapes. We all had a blast and developed an amazing appreciation for Bolivia's southern Altiplano.
